Detailed Charges

Fixed Charge₹50/kW of sanctioned load

PRIMARY — GERC 'Tariff Schedule of DGVCL, MGVCL, PGVCL & UGVCL' effective 01.04.2025, https://gercin.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Tariff-Schedule-of-DGVCL-MGVCL-PGVCL-UGVCL-w.e.f.-01.04.2025.pdf (state-uniform tariff for all four GERC-regulated DISCOMs, so applies to MGVCL). Rate: Non-RGP (services not covered elsewhere, aggregate load up to 40kW — the general commercial category), connected-load-below-10kW tier: Rs.4.35/unit flat + Rs.50/kW/month for first 10kW. For load 10-40kW, fixed charge steps to Rs.85/kW for the additional kW and energy rate rises to Rs.4.65/unit, plus a Rs.0.45/unit peak-hours (07-11h & 18-22h) surcharge for load above 10kW — none of the load tiering or ToD surcharge is modelled here. Electricity duty is extra and not quantified in the order.

Detailed Charges

Fixed Charge₹90/kW of sanctioned load

PRIMARY — GERC 'Tariff Schedule of DGVCL, MGVCL, PGVCL & UGVCL' effective 01.04.2025, same URL as commercial. Gujarat's LT tariff schedule has no separate 'LT Industrial' category name — Rate: LTMD ('services not covered in any other tariff category', aggregate load above 40kW) is the general LT tariff that most small/medium LT industrial (and other high-load) connections fall under, so it is used here as the industrial proxy. Demand charge is tiered (Rs.90/kW for first 40kW, Rs.130/kW for next 20kW, Rs.195/kW above 60kW, Rs.265/kW for demand in excess of contract) — only the first-40kW tier (Rs.90/kW) is modelled. Energy charge Rs.4.60/unit flat, plus Rs.0.45/unit peak-hours surcharge (not modelled). Electricity duty is extra and not quantified in the order.

RateRate/Unit

Detailed Charges

Fixed Charge₹20/kW of sanctioned load

PRIMARY — GERC 'Tariff Schedule of DGVCL, MGVCL, PGVCL & UGVCL' effective 01.04.2025, same URL as commercial. Rate: AG, metered-tariff option (fixed Rs.20/HP/month + Rs.0.60/unit) — Gujarat bills this per HP, not per kW, and the fixed charge here is entered directly in the schema's perKW field without HP-to-kW conversion (1 HP = 0.746 kW), so results will be off if the app's 'sanctioned load' input is genuinely in kW. An unmetered flat-HP alternative also exists (Rs.200/HP/month all-inclusive, no separate energy charge) and is not modelled. LTP-Lift Irrigation (canal/river schemes up to 125HP) is a separate, higher-rate category (Rs.20/HP + Rs.0.80/unit) also not modelled.

Gujarat Tariff Structure Explained

Gujarat 1 Unit Rate

For domestic electricity consumers in Gujarat, the initial 1 unit rate starts at ₹3.05 per kWh for consumption within the first slab per monthly billing cycle.

Tariff Categories

The tariff schedule for Gujarat covers 4 consumer categories:

  • Domestic (Residential) — for households.
  • Commercial — for shops and businesses.
  • Industrial — for factories and manufacturing units.
  • Agriculture — for irrigation and farm-pump connections.

Fixed Charges and Other Charges

On top of unit energy rates, MGVCL bills can include:

  • A fixed or demand charge, based on connection parameters.
  • Meter rent, where applicable.

Electricity Bill Calculation

To estimate your Gujarat electricity bill by hand:

  1. Multiply your monthly consumption in kilowatt-hours (units) by the applicable slab rate for each band.
  2. Add the fixed or demand charge.
  3. Add electricity duty and any fuel cost adjustment that applies.

Or skip the arithmetic with our MGVCL electricity bill calculator.

Why the rate is not one number

MGVCL's domestic tariff is telescopic: each unit you consume is billed at the rate of the slab it falls into, not a single rate applied to your whole bill. Your rate rises from ₹3.05/unit at the first slab to ₹5.20/unit at the top — so your 50th unit and your 400th unit genuinely cost different amounts, and a bigger household does not just pay “more of the same rate”, it pays a higher rate on the extra units.

How MGVCL's categories compare

The same unit of electricity is not priced the same for every connection type. On MGVCL, the first-slab domestic rate is ₹3.05/unit, compared with:

  • Commercial starts at ₹4.35/unit (flat, all units) — ₹1.30 higher than domestic.
  • Industrial starts at ₹4.60/unit (flat, all units) — ₹1.55 higher than domestic.
  • Agriculture starts at ₹0.60/unit (flat, all units) — ₹2.45 lower than domestic.

Commercial and industrial rates are usually higher because they are not subject to the same cross-subsidy that keeps small domestic consumption affordable; agricultural rates are frequently subsidised the other direction. Each category's full slab table is above.

Worked example: a 200-unit monthly bill

For a domestic connection on MGVCL consuming 200 units in one monthly billing period, with a 2 kW sanctioned load:

  • Energy charge (slab-wise): ₹742.50
  • Fixed charge (flat): ₹90.00
  • Total: ₹832.50

That works out to ₹4.16 per unit on average — higher than the ₹3.05 first-slab rate, because the fixed charge and duty are spread across the bill. A different sanctioned load changes the fixed-charge line above.

Getting your connection category right

The category your connection is registered under — not how the premises is actually used — is what the DISCOM bills against. A few situations that catch people out:

  • A shop, home office, or any space used for business is normally billed as Commercial, not domestic, even if it shares a building with your residence.
  • The Agriculture category applies to irrigation and farm-pump connections specifically, generally subject to its own eligibility and sanctioned-load rules rather than a household's domestic connection.
  • Changing a connection's registered category, or its sanctioned load, is a request you make to MGVCL directly — this page and our calculator both price whichever category and load you select, they do not change what is on file with the DISCOM.

How often these rates change

This tariff schedule took effect 1 April 2025 and we last verified it on 29 August 2026. Slab rates and fixed charges typically move once a year or less, set by Gujarat's electricity regulatory commission in a tariff order; where a fuel cost adjustment applies it is usually revised more often than the slab rates themselves.

Before relying on these figures for a large or binding decision, check MGVCL's own published schedule:

Average rate versus marginal rate

The average rate in the worked example above is what your whole bill costs per unit. It is the wrong number for one decision: whether to run one more appliance. Because the tariff is telescopic, any extra unit you add lands on your top slab, not your average — see our MGVCL unit price page for that marginal figure and how it compares with the average.
