What are slabs in electricity billing?
Most Indian DISCOMs bill domestic electricity using telescopic slabs — tiered per-unit rates that rise as your consumption increases.
- Each slab has its own rate — for example the first 100 units might be billed at one rate and the next 100 at a higher one.
- Slabs are telescopic, not retroactive — only the units that fall inside a higher slab are billed at that slab's rate, not your entire consumption.
- The slab count resets every billing cycle — monthly, bimonthly or quarterly, depending on your DISCOM.
- Some DISCOMs add a fuel cost adjustment or electricity duty on top of the slab rate — see the tariff table above for what applies here.

Common DOPN bill traps
Communitised villages may have a different day-to-day contact
Under Nagaland's communitisation policy, many villages have their electricity management handled locally by Village Electricity Boards or Village Councils rather than DOPN directly — check with your local body first if you're outside a major town like Kohima or Dimapur.
The jump above 100 units is large
Nagaland's domestic rate rises from ₹3.80 to ₹6.50/unit once you cross 100 units — a jump of over 70% on every additional unit, one of the steepest slab jumps among the states on this site.
Published tariff detail is thin for this state
Public secondary sources for Nagaland's exact domestic slab structure are limited — treat this estimate as indicative and confirm the current rate against your own DOPN bill.
How the DOPN bill is calculated
Among the highest tariffs in India
Nagaland’s domestic electricity is among the most expensive in the country. Reliable public slab data is scarce, so this uses an indicative structure starting near ₹3.80/unit.
How the Nagaland bill is calculated
Nagaland domestic supply is billed monthly. Consumption is split across telescopic slabs from ₹3.8 to ₹6.5/unit, each band charged at its own rate. A fixed charge of a flat ₹30/month applies.
Your bill, component by component
Based on the 150-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.
Energy chargeReducible₹705.00+
Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹705.00.
Fixed chargeFixed₹30.00+
Charged regardless of how many units you use (flat). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.
What's included in your bill
| Component | What it is | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Energy charge | Units × slab rate, telescopic | ₹3.80–₹6.50/unit |
| Fixed charge | Flat, independent of usage | ₹30 |
How to read your meter
Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.
Tools that cut your bill
Swap CFL for LED bulbs
Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹85.41/year at Nagaland's top slab rate (₹6.50/unit) — per bulb.

Top Slab Rate Comparison
DOPN's top domestic slab rate is ₹6.50/unit — more expensive than APDCL (₹7.60/unit), — more expensive than MSPDCL (₹6.50/unit). Billing cycles also differ: DOPN bills monthly, while APDCL bills monthly, MSPDCL bills monthly.
Tips to reduce your DOPN bill
- Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹6.50/unit cost the most.
- For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.
Energy saving tips for Nagaland electricity bills
Switch to BLDC ceiling fans
BLDC motors typically use 60–70% less power than a regular induction-motor fan for the same airflow.
Choose BEE 5-star rated appliances
A 5-star AC, refrigerator or washing machine can use 20–30% less electricity than a 1-star model of the same capacity.
Set your AC to 24°C or higher
Each degree below 24°C typically adds 3–5% to an AC's power draw — 24°C with a fan running is usually just as comfortable.
Switch to LED lighting
LED bulbs use roughly 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs for the same brightness, and last far longer.
Unplug appliances on standby
TVs, set-top boxes and chargers left plugged in can draw a small standby load around the clock — unplugging them when not in use adds up over a billing cycle.
Net metering explained
Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first.
About DOPN
- Structure — The Department of Power, Nagaland (DOPN) is the state government department responsible for generation, transmission and distribution of electricity across Nagaland.
- Coverage — Manages supply to both urban centres and rural areas statewide.
- Early 2000s — Facing recurring financial losses, Nagaland introduced an electricity "communitisation" policy, transferring day-to-day distribution management and revenue collection in many villages to local Village Electricity Boards.
- Today — DOPN retains ownership of the network and overall responsibility for supply, even in communitised villages.
Does DOPN supply electricity across all of Nagaland, including Kohima and Dimapur?
Yes. DOPN is responsible for power distribution statewide, including Kohima and Dimapur. In many villages, day-to-day distribution management has been handed to local Village Electricity Boards under the state's communitisation policy, but DOPN remains the overall utility.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Nagaland electricity tariff telescopic?
Yes. Nagaland charges telescopically: each slab is billed at its own rate, so moving up a slab does not re-price your cheaper units.
What is the fixed charge for a Nagaland domestic connection?
The fixed charge is a flat ₹30/month.
How accurate is this Nagaland bill estimate?
It uses the published domestic slab rates and is a close estimate, not a billing-grade figure. Public slab detail is limited; the structure here is indicative and needs verification. Always confirm against your official DOPN bill.
Does DOPN supply electricity across all of Nagaland, including Kohima and Dimapur?
Yes, in most areas — DOPN manages power distribution to urban and rural areas statewide, including Kohima and Dimapur, though many villages are 'communitised', with local Village Electricity Boards handling last-mile management under DOPN's oversight.
How do I check or pay my Nagaland DOPN bill online?
Pay via the Web Self Service portal at prepaid.dopn.gov.in. For queries, call the helpline 0370-2240178 or 0370-2243149.
What is DOPN, and what is electricity communitisation?
The Department of Power, Nagaland (DOPN) is the state government body for generation, transmission and distribution. Facing recurring losses, Nagaland introduced an electricity 'communitisation' policy in the early 2000s, handing day-to-day distribution management in many villages to local Village Electricity Boards while DOPN retains overall responsibility.
