What are slabs in electricity billing?

Most Indian DISCOMs bill domestic electricity using telescopic slabs — tiered per-unit rates that rise as your consumption increases.

  • Each slab has its own rate — for example the first 100 units might be billed at one rate and the next 100 at a higher one.
  • Slabs are telescopic, not retroactive — only the units that fall inside a higher slab are billed at that slab's rate, not your entire consumption.
  • The slab count resets every billing cycle — monthly, bimonthly or quarterly, depending on your DISCOM.
  • Some DISCOMs add a fuel cost adjustment or electricity duty on top of the slab rate — see the tariff table above for what applies here.

Common BESCOM bill traps

Gruha Jyothi isn't a flat 200 free units

The free allowance is capped at your household's own average consumption from the previous year (plus a buffer), up to a maximum of 200 units — not automatically 200 for everyone. Two neighbours with different past usage can have different free allowances.

Exceed your baseline, lose the whole month

If you use more than your sanctioned Gruha Jyothi baseline in a given month, the scheme typically withdraws the subsidy for the entire month's bill — not just the units above the baseline. A one-off high-usage month can cost more than expected.

Fixed charge scales with sanctioned load

BESCOM's ₹110/kW fixed charge is based on your sanctioned load, not a flat per-connection fee. A higher sanctioned load (useful for running an AC or larger appliances) raises the fixed charge regardless of how many units you actually use.

The ₹0.36 KERC surcharge is separate from the slab rate

Added from April 2025, this per-unit surcharge sits on top of the published slab rates and applies to every consumer category — it won't appear as a “slab” on your bill but does add to the total.

How the BESCOM bill is calculated

Gruha Jyothi — free, but conditional

Gruha Jyothi gives eligible households up to 200 free units a month, capped at their previous year's average consumption plus a buffer. Crucially, if you exceed the threshold in a month, you pay the entire bill for that month — not just the excess. This calculator models the simple "first 200 units free" case; your actual Gruha Jyothi benefit depends on your sanctioned baseline.

Monthly LT-2a slabs plus a KERC surcharge

Urban domestic (LT-2a) energy is charged at ₹5.90 for the first 100 units, ₹7.25 for 101–200, and ₹8.60 above 200. Since April 2025 a ₹0.36/unit KERC surcharge applies on top, along with a ₹110/kW fixed charge.

Your bill, component by component

Based on the 250-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.

Energy chargeReducible₹1,745.00+

Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹1,745.00.

Fuel cost adjustment (FCA)Set by DISCOM₹90.00+

A ₹0.36/unit pass-through surcharge that tracks the DISCOM's power-purchase cost. It applies equally to every consumer on this tariff and isn't something you can reduce by changing usage.

Fixed chargeFixed₹330.00+

Charged regardless of how many units you use (₹110/kW × 3 kW). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.

What's included in your bill

ComponentWhat it isTypical range
Energy chargeUnits × slab rate, telescopic₹5.90–₹8.60/unit
Fuel cost adjustmentPass-through fuel surcharge₹0.36/unit
Fixed chargeFlat, independent of usage₹110/kW of sanctioned load

How to read your meter

Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

Tools that cut your bill

Swap CFL for LED bulbs

Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹117.73/year at Karnataka's top slab rate (₹8.96/unit) — per bulb.

Tips to reduce your BESCOM bill

  • Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹8.60/unit cost the most.
  • The ₹0.36/unit fuel cost adjustment applies to every unit you use, so reducing overall consumption reduces this line too — unlike the fixed charge.
  • For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.

Energy saving tips for Karnataka electricity bills

Switch to BLDC ceiling fans

BLDC motors typically use 60–70% less power than a regular induction-motor fan for the same airflow.

Choose BEE 5-star rated appliances

A 5-star AC, refrigerator or washing machine can use 20–30% less electricity than a 1-star model of the same capacity.

Set your AC to 24°C or higher

Each degree below 24°C typically adds 3–5% to an AC's power draw — 24°C with a fan running is usually just as comfortable.

Switch to LED lighting

LED bulbs use roughly 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs for the same brightness, and last far longer.

Unplug appliances on standby

TVs, set-top boxes and chargers left plugged in can draw a small standby load around the clock — unplugging them when not in use adds up over a billing cycle.

Net metering explained

Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first.

About BESCOM

  • 2002 — BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd) formed 1 June 2002, when the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL)'s distribution business split into five regional companies — BESCOM, MESCOM, HESCOM, GESCOM and CESC — while KPTCL retained transmission.
  • Coverage — BESCOM's territory covers Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural districts plus six neighbouring districts (Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Davanagere, Tumkur, Chitradurga, Ramanagara) — wider than Bangalore city alone.

Does BESCOM supply all of Bangalore city?

Yes for Bangalore itself, but BESCOM's territory extends well beyond the city — it covers eight districts in total. If your connection is outside Bangalore Urban/Rural (for example in Mangalore, Hubli or Gulbarga), you're more likely served by MESCOM, HESCOM or GESCOM instead.

How to check and pay your bill

  1. 1Visit bescom.co.in or open the BESCOM Mithra app
  2. 2Enter your Account ID (RR Number) to view your current bill
  3. 3Verify the amount and pay via UPI, card or net banking

Frequently asked questions

How does Gruha Jyothi decide if my power is free?

Your free allowance is your previous year’s average monthly consumption plus a 10% buffer, capped at 200 units. If you stay within it, those units are free; if you exceed it in a month, the full bill for that month is payable.

I used 250 units — is any of it free under Gruha Jyothi?

If 250 units is above your sanctioned baseline, you typically lose the benefit for that month and pay the full telescopic bill. The calculator’s subsidy toggle shows the simplified first-200-free case for comparison.

What is the ₹0.36 surcharge on Karnataka bills?

It is an additional per-unit surcharge KERC introduced from April 2025, applied to all consumer categories on top of the base slab rates.

Does BESCOM bill monthly?

Yes, BESCOM issues domestic bills every month, and the Gruha Jyothi eligibility is assessed on each month’s consumption.

Does BESCOM cover the whole of Bangalore?

BESCOM covers Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural districts plus six neighbouring districts (Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Davanagere, Tumkur, Chitradurga, Ramanagara) — the rest of Karnataka is served by MESCOM, HESCOM, GESCOM and CESC.

How do I check or pay my BESCOM bill online?

Pay via the official BESCOM website (bescom.co.in) or the BESCOM Mithra app. For outages or billing issues, call the 24×7 helpline 1912.

What's the difference between BESCOM and KPTCL?

KPTCL (Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation) used to handle both transmission and distribution. On 1 June 2002 its distribution business was split into five regional companies, one of which is BESCOM — covering Bangalore and the surrounding districts.

How often is the BESCOM tariff updated?

KERC reviews rates periodically, with a notable ₹0.36/unit surcharge added from April 2025. We record the source order and a last-verified date on every tariff — visible at the bottom of this page.
