KSEB Bill Calculator (Kerala)

Estimate your Kerala electricity bill

Estimate your KSEB electricity bill for Kerala. KSEB bills domestic consumers bi-monthly but assesses slabs on the monthly average (units ÷ 2). Below 250 units/month the tariff is telescopic; cross 250 and Kerala's well-known non-telescopic cliff kicks in.

The bi-monthly rule

KSEB bills bi-monthly. The units you enter represent your full ~60-day billing period — not a single month. To compare against a monthly figure, we divide the total by 2, shown as the monthly-equivalent on your result.

The 250-unit non-telescopic cliff

Telescopic (slab-wise)

>250 units/month avg

Flat rate on ALL units

Cross a monthly average of 250 units and KSEB switches your entire bi-monthly consumption to a single higher non-telescopic rate — not just the units above 250. This is the single most misunderstood rule on a KSEB bill.

What are slabs in electricity billing?

Most Indian DISCOMs bill domestic electricity using telescopic slabs — tiered per-unit rates that rise as your consumption increases.

  • Each slab has its own rate — for example the first 100 units might be billed at one rate and the next 100 at a higher one.
  • Slabs are telescopic, not retroactive — only the units that fall inside a higher slab are billed at that slab's rate, not your entire consumption.
  • The slab count resets every billing cycle — monthly, bimonthly or quarterly, depending on your DISCOM.
  • Some DISCOMs add a fuel cost adjustment or electricity duty on top of the slab rate — see the tariff table above for what applies here.

Common KSEB bill traps

The 250-unit cliff is the single biggest trap

Below a 250 units/month average, KSEB charges telescopically. The moment your average crosses 250, your entire bi-monthly consumption is re-billed at a single higher non-telescopic rate — not just the units above 250. This calculator only models the telescopic range and is not accurate above it.

Bi-monthly bill, monthly-average trigger

Because the 250-unit threshold is assessed on your monthly average (bi-monthly total ÷ 2), a 501-unit bi-monthly bill crosses the cliff even though “501” doesn't look close to “250” at first glance.

Fixed charge depends on phase

KSEB's fixed charge is ₹80 for single-phase and ₹220 for three-phase connections per bi-monthly cycle — a similar structure to Tamil Nadu's, but at different amounts.

How the KSEB bill is calculated

The 250-unit non-telescopic cliff

Up to 250 units a month, each slab is charged at its own rate (telescopic). The moment your monthly average crosses 250 units, KSEB re-bills your entire consumption at a single higher non-telescopic rate — so 251 units can cost noticeably more than 250. This calculator models the telescopic range only and is not accurate above 250 units/month.

Bi-monthly billing, monthly assessment

Bills arrive every two months, but the slab thresholds are applied to the monthly average. Enter your two-month units here; the calculator uses bi-monthly slab widths (twice the monthly figures) and shows a monthly-equivalent total.

Telescopic slabs and fixed charge

Monthly telescopic rates run ₹3.35 (0–50), ₹4.25 (51–100), ₹5.35 (101–150), ₹7.20 (151–200) and ₹8.50 (201–250), plus a fixed charge of ₹40/month single-phase and 5% electricity duty.

Your bill, component by component

Based on the 300-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.

Energy chargeReducible₹1,295.00+

Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹1,295.00.

Fixed chargeFixed₹80.00+

Charged regardless of how many units you use (single-phase). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.

Electricity dutyStatutory₹64.75+

A 5% state government levy on the energy charge — set by statute, not by the DISCOM, and not reducible by usage pattern.

What's included in your bill

Fixed chargeFlat, independent of usage₹80 / ₹220 (single / three-phase)

How to read your meter

Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

Tools that cut your bill

Swap CFL for LED bulbs

Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹117.34/year at Kerala's top slab rate (₹8.93/unit) — per bulb.

Tips to reduce your KSEB bill

  • Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹8.50/unit cost the most.
  • For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.

Energy saving tips for Kerala electricity bills

Switch to BLDC ceiling fans

BLDC motors typically use 60–70% less power than a regular induction-motor fan for the same airflow.

Choose BEE 5-star rated appliances

A 5-star AC, refrigerator or washing machine can use 20–30% less electricity than a 1-star model of the same capacity.

Set your AC to 24°C or higher

Each degree below 24°C typically adds 3–5% to an AC's power draw — 24°C with a fan running is usually just as comfortable.

Switch to LED lighting

LED bulbs use roughly 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs for the same brightness, and last far longer.

Unplug appliances on standby

TVs, set-top boxes and chargers left plugged in can draw a small standby load around the clock — unplugging them when not in use adds up over a billing cycle.

Net metering explained

Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 250-unit rule in Kerala?

Below 250 units/month KSEB charges telescopically (each slab at its own rate). Above 250 units/month it switches to non-telescopic — your whole consumption is billed at one higher rate, which this calculator does not model.

KSEB bills me every two months — how do slabs work?

Slabs are assessed on the monthly average, i.e. your two-month units ÷ 2. The calculator uses bi-monthly slab widths and shows a monthly-equivalent figure.

Why might my real KSEB bill differ above 250 units?

Because the non-telescopic regime above 250 units/month re-prices your entire usage at a single higher rate. Treat estimates above 500 bi-monthly units as indicative only.

Is there an electricity duty in Kerala?

Yes, a 5% electricity duty applies on the energy charge, along with a per-month fixed charge billed bi-monthly.

Does KSEB supply electricity to all of Kerala?

Almost all — KSEB Limited (KSEBL) covers the entire state except the Thrissur Municipal Corporation area, the Munnar (Kannan Devan Hills) area, and a handful of small industrial-park licensees, which have their own separate distribution licensees.

How do I check or pay my KSEB bill online?

Pay via the official KSEB Web Self Service portal at wss.kseb.in, or the KSEB Mobile App. For queries or outages, call the 24×7 helpline 1912 or 0471-2555544.

What's the difference between KSEB and KSEB Limited (KSEBL)?

The original Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), formed in 1957, was converted into a company — Kerala State Electricity Board Limited (KSEBL) — incorporated in January 2011 and operational from 1 November 2013. "KSEB" is still the everyday name people use.
