What are slabs in electricity billing?

Most Indian DISCOMs bill domestic electricity using telescopic slabs — tiered per-unit rates that rise as your consumption increases.

  • Each slab has its own rate — for example the first 100 units might be billed at one rate and the next 100 at a higher one.
  • Slabs are telescopic, not retroactive — only the units that fall inside a higher slab are billed at that slab's rate, not your entire consumption.
  • The slab count resets every billing cycle — monthly, bimonthly or quarterly, depending on your DISCOM.
  • Some DISCOMs add a fuel cost adjustment or electricity duty on top of the slab rate — see the tariff table above for what applies here.

Common JBVNL bill traps

It's a flat rate, so slab position doesn't matter

Unlike most states, every unit is billed at the same ₹6.85/unit (urban) regardless of how much you use — there's no telescopic discount for staying in a lower band, since there is no band.

The 200-free-units benefit isn't universal

Around 40 lakh of JBVNL's ~46 lakh domestic consumers get up to 200 free units a month, but this depends on scheme eligibility — check your account status rather than assuming it applies.

Rural rates are cheaper and not modelled here

This calculator uses the urban (DS-II) rate of ₹6.85/unit. Rural domestic (DS-I) connections are billed at a lower ₹6.70/unit with a different fixed charge, which isn't reflected in this estimate.

How the JBVNL bill is calculated

Flat rate, but 200 units free

Jharkhand charges a flat ₹6.85/unit for urban domestic supply (₹6.70 rural), but around 40 lakh of its ~46 lakh domestic consumers pay nothing because the state provides up to 200 free units per household each month.

How the Jharkhand bill is calculated

Jharkhand domestic supply is billed monthly. Every unit is charged at a flat ₹6.85/unit. A fixed charge of ₹100 per kW of sanctioned load applies.

Your bill, component by component

Based on the 150-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.

Energy chargeReducible₹1,027.50+

Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹1,027.50.

Fixed chargeFixed₹300.00+

Charged regardless of how many units you use (₹100/kW × 3 kW). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.

What's included in your bill

ComponentWhat it isTypical range
Energy chargeUnits × slab rate, telescopic₹6.85–₹6.85/unit
Fixed chargeFlat, independent of usage₹100/kW of sanctioned load

How to read your meter

Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

Tools that cut your bill

Swap CFL for LED bulbs

Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹90.01/year at Jharkhand's top slab rate (₹6.85/unit) — per bulb.

Tips to reduce your JBVNL bill

  • Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹6.85/unit cost the most.
  • For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.

Energy saving tips for Jharkhand electricity bills

Switch to BLDC ceiling fans

BLDC motors typically use 60–70% less power than a regular induction-motor fan for the same airflow.

Choose BEE 5-star rated appliances

A 5-star AC, refrigerator or washing machine can use 20–30% less electricity than a 1-star model of the same capacity.

Set your AC to 24°C or higher

Each degree below 24°C typically adds 3–5% to an AC's power draw — 24°C with a fan running is usually just as comfortable.

Switch to LED lighting

LED bulbs use roughly 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs for the same brightness, and last far longer.

Unplug appliances on standby

TVs, set-top boxes and chargers left plugged in can draw a small standby load around the clock — unplugging them when not in use adds up over a billing cycle.

Net metering explained

Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first.
