What are slabs in electricity billing?

Most Indian DISCOMs bill domestic electricity using telescopic slabs — tiered per-unit rates that rise as your consumption increases.

  • Each slab has its own rate — for example the first 100 units might be billed at one rate and the next 100 at a higher one.
  • Slabs are telescopic, not retroactive — only the units that fall inside a higher slab are billed at that slab's rate, not your entire consumption.
  • The slab count resets every billing cycle — monthly, bimonthly or quarterly, depending on your DISCOM.
  • Some DISCOMs add a fuel cost adjustment or electricity duty on top of the slab rate — see the tariff table above for what applies here.

Common BRPL bill traps

BRPL is not all of Delhi

BRPL bills only South and West Delhi. If your area is East, Central, North or North-West Delhi, your actual discom is BYPL or TPDDL, which may have different tariffs and processes even under the same DERC schedule.

The PPAC surcharge isn't in this estimate

Delhi's Power Purchase Adjustment Cost (PPAC) surcharge adds roughly 30% on top of energy charges and is not modelled here, so your real bill — above the free-unit tier — will run meaningfully higher than this calculator shows.

The free-unit benefit needs opting in

The up-to-200-free-units scheme is not automatic — eligible consumers must be opted in on their account. Check your latest bill to confirm the subsidy is actually being applied.

How the BRPL bill is calculated

Up to 200 free units, then a PPAC surcharge

Delhi gives opted-in domestic consumers up to 200 free units a month and half-price power for 201–400 units. But bills also carry a Power Purchase Adjustment Cost (PPAC) surcharge of roughly 30% on energy charges. All three discoms — BRPL, BYPL and TPDDL — follow the same DERC schedule.

How the Delhi bill is calculated

Delhi domestic supply is billed monthly. Consumption is split across telescopic slabs from ₹3 to ₹8/unit, each band charged at its own rate. A fixed charge of ₹100 per kW of sanctioned load applies.

Your bill, component by component

Based on the 400-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.

Energy chargeReducible₹1,500.00+

Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹1,500.00.

Fixed chargeFixed₹300.00+

Charged regardless of how many units you use (₹100/kW × 3 kW). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.

What's included in your bill

ComponentWhat it isTypical range
Energy chargeUnits × slab rate, telescopic₹3.00–₹8.00/unit
Fixed chargeFlat, independent of usage₹100/kW of sanctioned load
SubsidyUp to 200 free units (opt-in)200 free units

How to read your meter

Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

Tools that cut your bill

Swap CFL for LED bulbs

Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹105.12/year at Delhi's top slab rate (₹8.00/unit) — per bulb.

Tips to reduce your BRPL bill

  • Confirm your eligibility for Up to 200 free units (opt-in) is correctly marked on your account — it's worth 200 free units every cycle.
  • Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹8.00/unit cost the most.
  • For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.

Energy saving tips for Delhi electricity bills

Switch to BLDC ceiling fans

BLDC motors typically use 60–70% less power than a regular induction-motor fan for the same airflow.

Choose BEE 5-star rated appliances

A 5-star AC, refrigerator or washing machine can use 20–30% less electricity than a 1-star model of the same capacity.

Set your AC to 24°C or higher

Each degree below 24°C typically adds 3–5% to an AC's power draw — 24°C with a fan running is usually just as comfortable.

Switch to LED lighting

LED bulbs use roughly 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs for the same brightness, and last far longer.

Unplug appliances on standby

TVs, set-top boxes and chargers left plugged in can draw a small standby load around the clock — unplugging them when not in use adds up over a billing cycle.

Net metering explained

Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first.

About BRPL

  • 2002 — The state-owned Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB), an integrated utility, unbundled after years of heavy technical and commercial losses. Its distribution business was privatised into three companies: BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL), BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL), and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL, originally NDPL).
  • Today — BRPL serves South and West Delhi — about 30 lakh consumers across areas including Dwarka, Janakpuri, Saket, Vasant Kunj, R.K. Puram and Najafgarh — while BYPL and TPDDL cover the rest of the capital.

Does BRPL supply electricity to all of Delhi?

No. BRPL covers South and West Delhi only. East and Central Delhi are served by BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL), and North/North-West Delhi by Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL). All three follow the same DERC tariff shown on this page, but billing and customer service are separate.

How to check and pay your bill

  1. 1Visit the BSES Delhi portal and select the BRPL section
  2. 2Enter your CA (Consumer Account) number to fetch your current bill
  3. 3Verify the amount and pay via UPI, card or net banking
  4. 4Save the digital receipt for your records

Frequently asked questions

Is the Delhi electricity tariff telescopic?

Yes. Delhi charges telescopically: each slab is billed at its own rate, so moving up a slab does not re-price your cheaper units.

What is the fixed charge for a Delhi domestic connection?

The fixed charge is ₹100 per kW of sanctioned load.

How accurate is this Delhi bill estimate?

It uses the published domestic slab rates and is a close estimate, not a billing-grade figure. The PPAC surcharge (~30% of energy charge) is not modelled, so real Delhi bills above the free tier run higher. Always confirm against your official BRPL bill.

Does BRPL supply all of Delhi?

No. BRPL covers South and West Delhi only (around 30 lakh consumers across areas like Dwarka, Janakpuri, Saket, Vasant Kunj and Najafgarh). BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL) covers East and Central Delhi, and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL) covers North and North-West Delhi.

How do I check or pay my BRPL bill online?

Pay via the official BSES Delhi portal at bsesdelhi.com (BRPL section), or the BSES app. For queries, call the 24×7 toll-free helpline 19123.

What is BRPL, and how did it form?

In 2002, the state-owned Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB) was unbundled and its distribution business privatised into three companies: BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) for South/West Delhi, BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL) for East/Central Delhi, and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL, then NDPL) for North/North-West Delhi.
