What are slabs in electricity billing?
Most Indian DISCOMs bill domestic electricity using telescopic slabs — tiered per-unit rates that rise as your consumption increases.
- Each slab has its own rate — for example the first 100 units might be billed at one rate and the next 100 at a higher one.
- Slabs are telescopic, not retroactive — only the units that fall inside a higher slab are billed at that slab's rate, not your entire consumption.
- The slab count resets every billing cycle — monthly, bimonthly or quarterly, depending on your DISCOM.
- Some DISCOMs add a fuel cost adjustment or electricity duty on top of the slab rate — see the tariff table above for what applies here.

Common PSPCL bill traps
300 free units isn't unconditional
The scheme has an eligibility threshold; exceeding it in a billing cycle can make the entire bill payable rather than just the units above 300 — check your account's eligibility status rather than assuming coverage.
The per-unit rate varies by sanctioned load band
PSPCL's slab rates differ depending on your connection's load category (up to 2 kW, 2–7 kW, 7–20 kW), so two households using the same units can be billed differently based on sanctioned load alone.
Billing is bi-monthly in practice
This calculator uses a representative monthly schedule, but many PSPCL domestic bills are actually issued every two months — check your bill's actual period before comparing to this estimate.
How the PSPCL bill is calculated
300 free units a month
Punjab gives eligible domestic households up to 300 units of free electricity every month, which zeroes out the bill for most families. Note the scheme has a threshold — exceeding it in a cycle can make the whole bill payable — and PSPCL’s per-unit rate also varies by sanctioned load band.
How the Punjab bill is calculated
Punjab domestic supply is billed monthly. Consumption is split across telescopic slabs from ₹3.49 to ₹7.3/unit, each band charged at its own rate. A fixed charge of a flat ₹120/month applies.
Your bill, component by component
Based on the 250-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.
Energy chargeReducible₹1,225.00+
Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹1,225.00.
Fixed chargeFixed₹120.00+
Charged regardless of how many units you use (flat). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.
What's included in your bill
| Component | What it is | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Energy charge | Units × slab rate, telescopic | ₹3.49–₹7.30/unit |
| Fixed charge | Flat, independent of usage | ₹120 |
How to read your meter
Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.
Tools that cut your bill
Swap CFL for LED bulbs
Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹95.92/year at Punjab's top slab rate (₹7.30/unit) — per bulb.

PSPCL's top domestic slab rate is ₹7.30/unit — cheaper than UHBVN (₹6.45/unit), — more expensive than JVVNL (₹9.50/unit), — cheaper than CED (₹5.40/unit). Billing cycles also differ: PSPCL bills monthly, while UHBVN bills monthly, JVVNL bills monthly, CED bills monthly.
Tips to reduce your PSPCL bill
- Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹7.30/unit cost the most.
- For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.
Energy saving tips for Punjab electricity bills
Switch to BLDC ceiling fans
BLDC motors typically use 60–70% less power than a regular induction-motor fan for the same airflow.
Choose BEE 5-star rated appliances
A 5-star AC, refrigerator or washing machine can use 20–30% less electricity than a 1-star model of the same capacity.
Set your AC to 24°C or higher
Each degree below 24°C typically adds 3–5% to an AC's power draw — 24°C with a fan running is usually just as comfortable.
Switch to LED lighting
LED bulbs use roughly 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs for the same brightness, and last far longer.
Unplug appliances on standby
TVs, set-top boxes and chargers left plugged in can draw a small standby load around the clock — unplugging them when not in use adds up over a billing cycle.
Net metering explained
Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first.
About PSPCL
- 16 April 2010 — Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) unbundled into Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL), which took over generation and distribution, and Punjab State Transmission Corporation Ltd (PSTCL), which took over transmission and state load dispatch.
- Today — Unlike several neighbouring states, Punjab was not further split by region; PSPCL is the sole distribution company for the entire state.
Does PSPCL supply electricity to all of Punjab?
Yes. PSPCL is Punjab's single, statewide distribution company — there is no regional split like Rajasthan's three discoms or Uttar Pradesh's five.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Punjab electricity tariff telescopic?
Yes. Punjab charges telescopically: each slab is billed at its own rate, so moving up a slab does not re-price your cheaper units.
What is the fixed charge for a Punjab domestic connection?
The fixed charge is a flat ₹120/month.
How accurate is this Punjab bill estimate?
It uses the published domestic slab rates and is a close estimate, not a billing-grade figure. PSPCL bills bi-monthly in practice and rates vary by load band; this uses a representative monthly schedule. Always confirm against your official PSPCL bill.
Does PSPCL cover all of Punjab?
Yes — unlike Rajasthan, Gujarat or UP, Punjab has a single distribution company. PSPCL covers the entire state.
How do I check or pay my PSPCL bill online?
Pay via the official portal at billpayment.pspcl.in or the PSPCL mobile app. For queries or outages, call the 24×7 helpline 1912.
What is PSPCL, and how did it form?
PSPCL (Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd) was incorporated on 16 April 2010, when the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) was unbundled into PSPCL (generation and distribution) and PSTCL (transmission).
